ALITO’S WAY
October 31, 2005
President Bush nominates a real conservative for the US Supreme Court. Took him long enough!
UPDATE: If Harry Reid can’t stand him, Alito must be an excellent choice. Wow. Bush is back, baby.
SECOND UPDATE: A response to an anti-Alito talking point.
THIRD UPDATE: Terry Eastland on Alito.
FOURTH UPDATE: Powerline responds to another anti-Alito talking point.

From the moment that Brit Hume responded to a Juan Williams rant on this morning’s Fox News Sunday with a euphemism for "calm down," I knew people on the far left would seize upon Hume’s reply in an effort to smear him as some sort of racist. It’s already happening.
UPDATE: I didn’t realize that some on the left view Williams as an Alan Colmes-style milquetoast.
SECOND UPDATE: Ann Althouse also sees what’s coming. (By the way, has anyone pointed out how ironic it is that the show began with an appearance by Trent Lott, who made a far more objectionable statement a few years back?)
THIRD UPDATE: DailyKos.com is after Hume.

Saw II unmasks The Legend of Zorro, while Prime and The Weather Man both perform poorly, largely due to ad campaigns that didn’t make either film look like anything you had to rush out of the house to see.
So What Took You So Long?

President Bush is seriously considering a conservative and not a crony to replace Sandra Day O’Connor on the US Supreme Court. Why the hell didn’t he do this in the first place?

You can tell the left is pissed that Karl Rove wasn’t indicted today for his supposed involvement in the Valerie Plame case. However, the question remains: why does the left think that this "controversy" will garner political traction for the Democrats? Here’s a cold fact–most people don’t care. This simply doesn’t affect people’s everyday lives in the same way that, say, the Terri Schiavo case did. To most non-political Americans, it’s just a case of elite multi-millionaires fighting other elite multi-millionaires. Anyone who supports the Democrats or Republicans won’t change their views one way or the other as a result of Scooter Libby’s indictment. So why is the left so enthused? Rush Limbaugh has asserted that liberals think that this "controversy" can be built up into the new Watergate, but surely progressives can’t be so deluded as to think this will actually be the case, can they?
UPDATE: National Review on the indictment.

Harriet Miers withdraws her nomination to the US Supreme Court. Our long national nightmare is over! With each passing day, it became more and more obvious that, were she to be confirmed, she’d do as much damage to the Court as Katrina did to New Orleans. Next time, Mr. President, please nominate a real conservative, and not the "store brand," thank you very much.
UPDATE: Fred Barnes and Rich Lowry on what Bush should do next.

Actually, I hope he doesn’t, but Boston Mayor Tom Menino is apparently considering running for a fifth term in 2009! Lord love a duck…

Do people care about what John Kerry thinks anymore? Seriously, if this guy is so smart, and his ideas about stabilizing Iraq are so valid, then how come he couldn’t win last November?
