Oh! You Pretty Things

Lots of controversy in Boston about a street gang that’s terrorizing people in the neighborhoods of West Roxbury and Roslindale. The gang, known as (don’t laugh) Fruits and Vegetables (because several members apparently work part-time in local grocery stores) has been implicated in several property crimes and assaults, including an attempted vehicular homicide. What makes the group unusual is that 1) the youths involved go to high-profile schools like Catholic Memorial and Boston Latin and 2) some members are apparently the sons of Boston Police officers. Lovely, isn’t it?

Two questions about these refined, civilized, upstanding young men:

1. If they’re trying to be so macho, why would they give themselves a name that brings up images of alternative lifestyles?

2. Why haven’t Catholic Memorial and Boston Latin kicked these young reprobates out? A few years back, Boston Latin dealt harshly with some students who sexually assaulted a young girl at a train station, so why have these young punks not been handled in a similar fashion?

(Plus, more on one of the little lovelies.)
